Barberena is a municipality in the department of Santa Rosa located in the southern region of Guatemala known as ‘sur oriental’. Barberena, being a small town surrounded by many rural communities, acts as the epicenter for trade in this region.
The Barberena Regional blend consists of Caturra, Catuaí, Bourbon, Catimor, and Anacafé14 varietals shaded by Inga and Cuje trees. Over the years this Barberena regional blend has provided some of the highest quality cherries processed at Beneficio La Esperanza.
Rax Juyu is the largest farm contributing to this blend. This farm began 10 years ago and has been managed by Jose Tojin Silva for the past 8 years. Rax Juyu is a 54 hectare farm with 9 farmers, 28 shade tree managers, and 130-150 harvesters. It is also the collection site for all of the cherry delivered to Beneficio La Esperanza. Every evening the harvesters from the surrounding farms arrive to weigh their daily lot. These cherries are then combined and sent to Beneficio La Esperanza to be wet-wash processed and patio dried.
